Green Lotteries, Whatever Next?

Wednesday 21st May 2008

It is a link which few people would have ever guessed, but it seems that money raised from the massive number of lottery schemes around the world is being used to fund a whole range of environmental programs. It seems as though the ‘green lottery’ has arrived!

There are now many examples of how lottery money is being used for the good of the environment, but there are many who believe that it should be used elsewhere and governments are using the money to cover their own short falls. But do people really matter where the funding comes from?

Over the last few years we have seen a major increase in so called ‘green taxes’ around the world, from increased airport duties to car tax to higher taxes at the fuel pumps. Each and every way we turn there seems to be a new ‘green tax’ to save the day, but is it working? Is the money hitting the spot?

While the spending patterns and strategies of the various governments around the world are very much shrouded in secrecy there seems little sign of ‘green taxes’ being used for ‘green issues’. Have governments around the world found their own personal honey pot or are they just being practical?
