WPT Championship Day 2 Round-up

If there was any dead money in Day 1 of the $25,000 buy-in event, they were long gone by the time players returned for Day 2 at the Bellagio

Tuesday 22nd April 2008

The field for Day 2 of the 2008 World Poker Tour Championship may be the most impressive line-up of players assembled for one tournament. With an entire room packed with online and live pros, there were often tables with half a dozen scarily good players on them. Anyone who did make it through the day would have been sure to be relieved.

Of course, when you have a star-studded field such as this, you tend to get a star-studded rail too. Nenad Medic, Allen Kessler, Layne Flack, Haralabos Voulgaris, Shannon Shorr, Erick Lindgren, Michael Binger, Freddy Deeb, David “The Dragon” Pham , Michael 'The Grinder' Mizrachi, Tuan Le, Alan Goehring, Joe Hachem, Jerry Yang, Sam Farha, Howard Lederer, Jennifer Harman, Chris 'Jesus' Ferguson, Antonio 'The Magician' Esfandiari, Erica Scheonberg, Paul Wasicka, Ted Forrest, and one Phil Hellmuth were all spectators come the end of the day. That's one tough looking side game right there...

At the other end of the spectrum, some players were setting themselves up for a major assault on Day 3, armed with some monster chip stacks. Cory Carroll bagged 356,000 chips, many of which he earned after doubling up through Tom Dwan, while Andrew Robl got many of his 267,000 courtesy of Dario Minieri. However, neither of the two players could touch overnight chip leader Robert Mizrachi, who is sat on 523,200.

One name which many will recognise at the top of the leaderboard is Carlos Mortensen. He’s well in contention for setting WPT history and defending the title he won last year. His stack of 320,000 chips mean the Spaniard has every chance to do the unthinkable – you can be sure he’ll make some interesting sculptures out of those!
