Online Qualifier Wins EPT Grand Final

Canadian Glenn Chorny takes home $3,198,500 after qualifying for $700 at PokerStars.com

Tuesday 22nd April 2008

The fourth annual European Poker Tour (EPT) Grand Final sponsored by Internet casino PokerStars.com was won last week by an online qualifier from Canada.

Glenn Chorny is a business student from Timmins, Ontario, and took home $3,198,500 after outlasting 841 other hopefuls from around the world, He qualified for the event by playing PokerStars.com’s Steps satellites for $700 and had previously won a World Poker Open pot-limit Omaha event along with finishing 13th in the PokerStars.com EPT Caribbean Adventure. In winning, he survived a 14-hour heads-up battle with Hungarian Denes Kalo, who walked away with $1,864,116 for the second place finish.

The event saw some of the world’s best poker players converge on the Monte Carlo Bay Hotel and Casino Resort to take part in what many are reporting was the best card playing the EPT had ever seen. American Antonio Esfandiari needed a win to go with his World Poker Tour and World Series of Poker triumphs for a triple crown but was eliminated in eighth place for $265,625. Dane Henrik Gwinner followed in ninth with fellow countryman Stig Top Rasmussen in tenth, both of which received $199,219.

Russia’s Valeri Ilikyan was eliminated in seventh spot to take home $400,018 with Italy’s Luca Pagano following him in sixth place. Pagano had earlier made history by being part of the first father and son duo to make it into the money at the EPT and set another milestone by taking home $532,831 for his record tenth cash finish.

Michael Martin was eliminated in fifth place to walk away with $665,643 while fellow American and tournament favourite Isaac Baron lost on an all-in to Chorny in his 251st hand to go home in fourth spot with $931,268.

Canadian Maxime Villemure was also eliminated by Chorny to finish in third place to take home $1,130,487.
