Proposed Mega-Resort For Atlantic City

With a cost of up to two billion dollars, new casino and hotel would rival New York City skyscrapers.

Friday 2nd May 2008

In America, a casino development group headed by Curtis Bashaw and Wallace Barr has announced that it wants to construct a mega-resort on the southern end of Atlantic City costing as much as two billion dollars.

Planned for the site of the former Dunes Casino at the southern end of the Boardwalk, the site would be 253.5 metres in height and rival some of the skyscrapers in New York City. It would include 2,000 hotel rooms, more than 18,580 square metres of gaming space, 32,516 square metres of retail, dining and entertainment and 13,935 square metres of convention space.

Barr is the former President and Chief Executive Officer for Caesars Entertainment while Bashaw is the past Executive Director of the New Jersey Casino Reinvestment Authority. They both now head development firm AC Gateway but the proposal only became public two weeks ago following the issuing of a construction application from the state’s Department of Environmental Protection.

“What we're trying to do is a complementary project with everything that is happening in town,' Bashaw told the Press of Atlantic City.

'We think this is a very important site along the beach. When you add this project to what Revel is doing and what Pinnacle is doing, you're creating a nice rhythm on the Boardwalk.'

Revel Entertainment is building a two billion dollar casino resort at the opposite end of the Boardwalk while MGM Mirage has plans for a $ 4.5 billion casino resort near Borgata. In addition, Pinnacle Entertainment is still expected to proceed with a proposed two billion dollar mega-casino while Bader Field, the former airport, has also been proposed as a casino site.

'I think the developments on the drawing board are all going to come into the marketplace and take Atlantic City to the next step, including Bader,” said Bashaw.
