First Major Darts Tournament Broadcast Exclusively Online
World leader in digital media team up with official darts association to broadcast £200,000 tournament solely over the web
Monday 21st April 2008
An inaugural darts tournament to take place in September and October 2008 will be the first ever to cater solely for an internet and gambling audience.
In an unprecedented move for the sport, the Professional Darts Corporation and digital sports specialists Perform will be broadcasting the event solely over the internet from 11am to 9pm throughout the event.
This decision follows the success of Perform and Matchbook Sports’ previous internet event Championship League Snooker, combined with research indicating that betting turnover on internet-broadcast events is up to five times greater than on matches not streamed live.
PDC Chairman Barry Hearn described the upcoming tournament as “an exciting new concept in darts.” He said: “The players, venue and production will be of the highest quality… this will be a completely new phenomenon for the sport.”
The winner of this nine-day tournament, spread across two months, will have to battle through groups of eight players to win a share of the £200,000 prize pool and a place in the Grand Slam of Darts, won in 2007 by Phil ‘The Power’ Taylor.
