Authorities To Review Use Of Steroids In Horse Racing

Thursday 22nd May 2008

While some are claiming that the timing of the discussion is a little insensitive and others feel it has been long overdue, we are still seeing the repercussions of the death of Eight Belles in the recent Kentucky Derby. Even though steroids have been illegal in horse racing for some time it seems that the authorities are very much in favour of a major review of the situation and improved testing.

There were many rumours surrounding the death of Eight Belles, with many believing that steroid use may have played a major part in the breakdown of the second horse past the post in the Derby. However, an autopsy on the horse showed no trace of steroids and no signs that the horse was injured or in any way unfit to race.

The racing authorities have been very vocal in their condemnation of steroid abuse in the horse racing industry and great strides have been made in the area of testing, but can more be done?

Many believe that the US government are tracking the situation very carefully and unless the sport is able to regulate itself they may be forced to step in. This would not only diminish the reputation of the sport, but take away control from the racing authorities once and for all.
