Asian Poker Tour Kicks Off With $1 Million Prize Pot
Tuesday 27th May 2008
The organisers of the Asian Poker Tour have taken a massive gamble with a $1 million prize pot tournament which starts in the Dusit Hotel, Makati City, Philippines this week. Yet again we are seeing another Poker tournament attempting to hit on the popularity of 2008 WSOP but is the pot too big, with many of the best players looking to WSOP?
The $2,500 buy-in tournament offers a first prize of $280,000 and while it is sure to attract the attention of many in the area, is it being played at the wrong time?
The Asian Poker Tour is the latest Poker tournament to try and benefit from the recent increase in Poker activity both online and offline. Even though the $1 million prize pot has led to a massive increase in the media coverage of the event, there is a growing resentment in the country towards the so called ‘evils’ of gambling. However, as they say in business, no publicity is bad publicity!
It will be very interesting to see how the tournament goes and how it manages to compete against coverage of WSOP. While there are very few tournaments that can even match WSOP, perhaps if the Asian Poker Tour was not in direct competition with WSOP it may fair better and become a central part of the Poker calendar?
