Anti-UIGEA Support Grows
Two more Congressmen add their names to Bill that would prohibit implementation of anti-online gambling legislation.
Friday 30th May 2008
In America, a proposal that would block the implementation of the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA) has received the support of two more Congressmen.
Representatives Steve Cohen, a Democrat from Tennessee, and Steven Rothman, a Democrat from New Jersey, added their names to the list of co-sponsors of Bill 5767, which would block implementation of legislation making it illegal for financial institutions to handle transactions between US residents and online poker and gaming operators.
Introduced to the United States House of Representatives early last month by Congressmen Barney Frank from Massachusetts and Ron Paul from Texas, the legislation quickly gained ten signatures and saw five more sign up two weeks ago with the total number of signatures now standing at 19.
All seven of these new co-sponsors have also signed the Internet Gambling Regulation and Enforcement Act (IGREA) introduced by Frank in April of last year to legalise and regulate online gambling in the United States.
Bill 5767 ‘prohibits the Secretary of the Treasury and the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System from proposing, prescribing or implementing any regulation under subchapter IV of chapter 53 of title 31, United States Code and for other purposes’.
