WSOP Kicks Off The First World Championship Event

Saturday 31st May 2008

It seems that it is not only the timing of the final which has changed in the recent restructuring of the whole WSOP event. Traditionally it has always been the casino employee’s event which has kicked off past WSOP tournaments, but this time the employee table will bring down the curtain on the event. So why the changes?

It is unclear exactly why there have been so many changes to game timings, pot sizes and ultimately the date of the final but whatever the reason, some of the more traditionalists are not impressed. The ultimate aim is to focus the event on TV and the media into the future because this is where the big bucks are, but many feel this is a step too far.

However, whatever happens over the next few weeks and months the concerns being raised at the moment will no doubt be forgotten. The truth is that the structure of the event has remained pretty much the same since the 1960s. Now that TV and the media are taking more of an interest in the sport, the organisers seem to have little option but to go with the times and make the necessary changes to secure the future of the event
