Tories Promise To Get Back To Basics With The National Lottery
Thursday 5th June 2008
In a move which has the potential to not only benefit the more traditional UK charitable organisations but give many of the lottery playing public what they want, the Conservative Party has outlined their plans for the National Lottery if they were to be voted in at the next general election.
The increase in paperwork and the slow speed at which money is passed to charities has long been a bone of contention in the UK. The lottery operators are sitting on literally billions of pounds while many UK charities are suffering from falling income. While exact details of how the Conservatives will change the system were not released, the move has been welcomed by a number of UK charities as a step in the right direction.
In an interesting development the increased profile of the National Lottery has thrown into question the fact that the system is being used to fund a whole host of events and projects such as the Olympics. Demands for the government to reduce political interference within the system have been growing for some time in light of the ever increasing cost of the Olympics. This is an event which was authorised by the UK authorities with the cost being transferred directly to the UK public.
