While everyone knows that the ‘house’ is always the winner at the end of the day, the announcement that gamblers in the casinos of Atlantic City lost $415 million in the month of May 2008 alone has caught the headlines. This figure is 1.6% higher than that a year ago and shows that people are not reducing their gambling habits at the moment.
The figures were released as part of the New Jersey gambling regulators program of making gambling in the State as transparent as possible. When you consider that there are only 11 casinos in Atlantic City there must have been a lot of unhappy gamblers last month. It was interesting to see the split between slots and table games was $289.6 million and $125.7 respectively, showing that table games are more competitive but slot machines seem to bring in money for the casino operators.
The fact that gambling levels still seem to be on the up has surprised many in the State and given the industry something of a fillip after the recent spate of bad news. Whether this trend will continue for the foreseeable future very much remains to be seen but the economic slowdown around the world must surely impact at some stage?
