WSOP Event #16, $2,000 Omaha Hi/Lo: Andrew Brown Wins $226,483

Another leading pro gets close to adding another bracelet to his collection as Ted Forrest finishes running up in the Omaha Eight or Better event.

Wednesday 11th June 2008

Modesty isn’t necessarily a key requisite for poker players – ask Phil Hellmuth. When asked before the final table of Event 16, Andrew Brown described himself as the “the best PLO player nobody knows”. That goes half of the way to explaining how he won the Omaha Hi/Lo event, I guess.

The young player took on – and defeated – one of the best players in the business in the form of Ted Forrest in a heads-up victory that secured Brown his first bracelet.

For most of the tournament Brown played a solid game, only opening up when he needed to. Once he got heads-up with Forrest, he managed to run the pro down to as low as 150,000 chips before Forrest put on a spirited comeback. Even after Forrest battled all the way back to regain the chip lead with 1.235 million, Brown kept his cool and managed to launch a second wave of aggression to finally finish Forrest off.

In the final hand of the tournament, both players saw a flop of 9d-Jd-Ah in a raised pot. Forrest bet the flop, turn and river, and was called quickly on all three streets by Brown after the turn and river came 8c and 2s. As the cards went onto their back, each had:

Forrest: Ad – 4d – 7s – Qs for a flopped nut flush draw which missed, leaving him with a 8-7-4 low and one pair for the high.

Brown: 4s – 5d – Jh – 2h for flopped second pair that improved to two pair on the river, as well as a 8-5-4 low.

rown scooped the pot and with it the bracelet. Forrest left in second, disappointed at missing out on another bracelet to add to his tally.
