WSOP Event #20, $2,000 Limit Hold'em: Negreanu On The Final Table

Daniel Negreanu has found himself third in chips as he aims for his fourth bracelet

Thursday 12th June 2008

The tournament started with 480 players containing a mix of well-known limit instructors and big cash games players combined with the usual ‘big name-pros’. As Day 2 progressed one after another left the room, leaving us with just 9 at the close of play.

Some of the casualties who headed out (and normally straight over to the H.O.R.S.E tournament) included Alex Kravchenko, Shannon Shorr, JC Tran, John ‘The Razor’ Phan, Amnon Filippi and Phil Hellmuth, the latter falling just short of the money. Those who did make it to the profitable part of the tournament included Mike Schneider (a limit hold’em instructor on CardRunners, Matt Matros and cash game regular Eric Buchman).

There is one Canadian chap who is still in contention though, Mr Negreanu. As is his way, Negreanu was fighting for the chip lead throughout the day, although the wheels nearly came off as he plummeted to 36,000 in chips. Negreanu dug in though, and by the close of business he bagged 308,000, meaning he comes back third in chips.

For those of you who like the family connections in poker, there’s a new one for you to sweat at the final table of this event. Seat 3 will be occupied by Hien Tran, who is the brother of JC Tran. Mind you, he’s in for a rough ride as he will have to work fast to improve his current chip ‘stack’ of 58,000.

Here are the seat assignments and chip counts for the final table:

1. David Baker - 409,000

2. Jeremy Kottler - 47,000

3. Hien Tran - 58,000

4. Ugur Marangoz - 402,000

5. Fu Wong - 67,000

6. Gregory Wohletz - 301,000

7. Daniel Negreanu - 308,000

8. Derek Lerner - 133,000

9. Richard Li - 195,000
