Manchester will not pursue legal action as super-casino abandoned
Friday 13th June 2008
Manchester city council has announced that they will not be taking legal action against the government after they abandoned plans to build a super-casino in the city.
It was hoped that the casino would help stimulate urban regeneration in the city, providing a number of jobs for the local population.
However, plans were scrapped in February this year and there was talk of court action, but the city council has decided to work with the government to find alternative means of generating similar benefits for the region.
Sir Richard Leese, leader of the Manchester city council, said: "We are convinced that there is more to be gained for Manchester by working with government than from confronting them in the court room."
Manchester won the bid for the super-casino in 2007, beating favourites Blackpool and the Millennium Dome in London.
