The American Gaming Association (AGA), a trade group that represents the casino industry, spent $800,000 over the first quarter of 2008 lobbying on online gambling legislation along with other issues.
According to a piece in Canadian Business Online, the AGA lobbied on several online gambling measures including a proposal that would mandate a Federal study looking at the licensing, regulation and taxation of Internet gambling as well as a separate proposal that would license companies that accept virtual bets. The AGA, whose members include Bally Technologies Incorporated and MGM Mirage, also sought support on a measure intended to attract more tourists to the US along with rules governing the taxation of employees’ tips.
Besides Congress, the group lobbied the Treasury Department in the first three months of the year according to a form filed with the House of Representatives Clerk's Office.
