The Nevada Supreme Court yesterday dismissed an appeal to raise casino taxes in Nevada.
A teachers union had petitioned the high court for the increase, but a deal was struck between the Las Vegas casinos and Nevada State Education Association to keep the 44 per cent raise off the ballot later this year.
As an alternative, the teachers of Nevada will be looking to increase the taxes on hotel rooms.
This proposal is intended to combat the imminent shortfall in the budget between 2009 and 2011 and after this the extra funds will be used for student achievement and teacher salaries.
In the event that the legislature does not pass or the county commission does not put it on the ballot the union will start collecting signatures for a petition.
The move will be welcomed by the Las Vegas casinos who have experienced a decline in revenue in the last month of five per cent compared with the same month last year.
