Louisiana casinos enjoyed a 10.4 per cent increase in gaming revenue during May - a marked improvement after it fell by 7.2 per cent between March and April.
The 13 riverboat casinos in the state and Harrah's New Orleans reported an increase in winnings from $213.1 million (£106.5 million) to $235.2 million last month the state's three Indian reservation casinos were not included in the calculations.
Last year's figures were almost $15 million lower than the takings this May.
Despite this, Wade Duty, executive director of the Casino Association of Louisiana, commented: "Theoretically, you want to grow about four per cent a year. We've only grown about two per cent a year."
He noted that the flooding in New Orleans had had a powerful impact on casino revenue and that the sizable increase was a reflection of a local economy beginning to pick up again.
Meanwhile, casinos in Nevada reported that they had experienced a five per cent decline in their May revenue from their winnings the year before.
