When the casino industry was a dirty word the Unions showed very little interest in employees of the large gambling groups, but now that casinos have come out of the wood work and there are big bucks being made, it seems as though the Unions have found a new voice. Casino dealer in Atlantic City are set to march in the streets this week after the newly unionized casinos in the City were not able to reach an agreement with employers. The move will highlight the low pay and long ours that many employees’ experiences and could turn nasty.
Unions for casino workers in the US are becoming more and more common with many dealers and other casino staff looking to strengthen their position around the negotiating table. The fact that the casino workers in the City are looking for one voice, through the Unions, may well be bad news for the casino magnates who have relied upon cheap labour to date.
It will be interesting to if the casinos give in to the demand for Union representation because once the Unions gain a standing in the industry they could literally hold the casino operators to ransom.
