According to a new study, online bingo players in the UK are spending almost $1.2 billion per year on tickets from domestically operated sites based on the value of receipts and prizes.
Revealed last week by BingoPort.co.uk in its Size of the UK Online Bingo Industry report, SunBingo.co.uk was reportedly the nation’s most popular site with 19 percent of the market followed by GalaBingo.co.uk with 16 percent and FoxyBingo.com with 13 percent. Rounding out the top five were JackpotJoy.com with a ten percent market share and MeccaBingo.com with seven percent.
“We’ve seen unprecedented growth in the online bingo industry here in the UK in the past year,” said Scott Logan, Managing Director for BingoPort.co.uk.
“The fact that online bingo players are purchasing bingo tickets in the realm of $1.2 billion annually is truly amazing considering the credit crunch but not surprising considering the licensing of the online gaming industry in the UK.”
The figures take into account a collation of gameplay data gathered from BingoPort.co.uk’s monitoring services, which tracks major UK operators around the clock.
“This is the most accurate estimate to date of the size of the online bingo industry in this country,” said Logan.
“As the only company so comprehensively monitoring this data, we are able to gain a unique insight into the industry that isn’t possible otherwise, especially since most online bingo operators are not public companies and are reluctant to release information about their turnover.”
BingoPort.co.uk revealed that the number and variety of promotions run by operators has increased dramatically over the last year as land-based online bingo clubs struggle to gain and maintain market share.
“There is no doubt that the leaders such as SunBingo.co.uk and GalaBingo.co.uk have gained much of their market share on the back of their strong brand names,” said Logan.
“However, it is their ongoing jackpots and promotions that keep players coming back and help them maintain their positions.”
