Maybe not so well know away from racing circles, fearless Freddie Williams the infamous bookmaker who took on racing legend JP McManus a number of times, has died after suffering a heart attack at his home in Ayrshire. Freddie will forever be remembered for his big money jousts with McManus and the fact that he never walked away from a bet.
Unfortunately he also hit the headlines a couple of years ago when attacked by a masked gang putting £70,000 into the back of his car after a day of racing at Cheltenham. However, while the attack obviously alarmed him he hired a helicopter to take him too and from Cheltenham last year. When you consider that it cost him a staggering £90,000 to fulfil a boyhood dream and buy pitch number two at Cheltenham, fearless Freddie was not short of a few pounds!
He was often know to take six figure bets from McManus and they both seemed to have great respect for each other, in a sport which is often ultra competitive. Freddie made it to the top of the bookmaking profession from nowhere and was a well known celebrity in racing circles. At just 65 years of age the sport has lost one of its more colourful characters.
