As we start the second day of Wimbledon there is hope in the air that we can at least see a few British players survive into the second week but is it a reality or just a dream?
When you look at the men’s game it dominated by the likes of Roger Federer (6/4 to win the tournament), Rafael (5/2 to win) and Novak Djokovic (5/1 to taker the title). We then have Andy Roddick at 27/1 and Andrew Murray (the only real British hope to make it to week two) at near 50/1 to take the spoils.
While the ladies game is a little more open there is no British hope if you have a quick look at the betting, with punters more likely to land a big win gambling game by game with British ladies tennis. Maria Sharapova is the favourite again (6/4), Ana Ivanovi is a surprise second favourite (10/3) and then we have the likes of Serena Williams, Venus Williams and even Jelena Jankovic all in with a decent shout of claiming the woman’s title.
Sadly unless Andy Murray can pull something out of the bag it seems as though we will soon be looking back at another failed Wimbledon for the British players, still pinning for the days of yesteryear when we could at least put someone up with a decent chance of being victorious.
