While we may have arrived at one of the less surprising finals, the route taken will be one which is remembered for years to come. In the eyes of many people the Germans were lucky to get through an excellent game with Turkey, even though the Germans were literally odds on to storm into the final. It took a last minute winner to clinch the tie to the delight of the following army of fans.
In tonight’s semi-final we saw unfancied Russia breathing life back into the USSR with a ride to the semi-finals which few in the sport of football would have expected. While they did not quite perform up to the levels reached earlier in the tournament they had come up against a Spanish team which looks ready to take a major tournament for the first time in years. Often the team to promise but never deliver there are high hopes it will be different this year.
While the bookmakers have taken a shine to Spain’s chances, quoting them at odds on for the final, there seems to be good value in the 6/4 offered for a German victory. Those who follow football know it is foolish to write-off any German team, as England has seen at first hand!
