WSOP main event 'still the one to win'
Wednesday 2nd July 2008
Despite other prestigious tournaments coming to the fore, it is claimed that the main event at the World Series of Poker (WSOP) is still the one that most poker players want to win.
Victory in the tournament can instantly make a player a household name and is still the ultimate prize for those looking to make their mark on the game, according to PokerPlayer Magazine.
Dave Woods, the publication's editor-in-chief, noted that the HORSE tournament has become a prestigious event due to its buy-in of $50,000 (£25,000), which encourages high-rollers and the poker elite.
He said that the HORSE event was a good way to test the overall ability of a poker player, but the no-limit game was still the "pinnacle" of poker.
"The majority of people would still say that the main event is the one that they want to win; it's the big one and the one that's guaranteed to make you a household name," he explained.
This year the final table for the WSOP main event will take place in November rather than July in order to get a larger television audience.
