Tran Wins His First World Series of Poker Bracelet
Vietnamese pro defeats 2,718 players to take his tournament earnings past $1m
Wednesday 2nd July 2008
The No Limit Hold''em events at the World Series of Poker, particularly the smaller buy-in affairs, attract the largest field. It was the same with Event 49; as the festival draws to a close, players still pour hundreds of thousands into the prizepools in the hopes of winning the big prize and a golden bracelet.
As such, the poker professionals see their odds shorten dramatically in these events, which is why you see so many of the game''s top players winning non-Hold''em bracelets. However, every once in a while the variance evens out and the big names prove that they still have what it takes to beat the increasingly luck-based tournaments.
J.C. Tran, one of the many Vietnamese poker legends alongside 2008 $50,000 Championship H.O.R.S.E. first-place finisher Scotty Nguyen, took down the event for $631,170 and his first bracelet.
His Kc-Qc held up against Rasmus Nielsen''s Q-Jo, leaving the unknown player drawing to just three jacks with a 7% chance to get lucky as they bet it all on the turn. The river bricked and Tran won all the chips, the biggest prize, and poker prestige.
