Hollywood Set To Pass The Sugar

New documentary from director of Deal set to tell the story of Joe Hachem’s 2005 WSOP victory

Thursday 31st July 2008

According to Hollywood trade paper Variety, the man behind recent film Deal, Gil Cates Jr, is set to produce a documentary about Joe Hachem’s victory at the 2005 World Series of Poker (WSOP). Being produced for the big screen under the working title Pass The Sugar, the film will tell the story of Hachem, a Lebanese poker player who moved to Australia and famously shouted ‘Aussie, Aussie, Aussie’ upon scoring the win, which saw him receive the largest prize up to that time from a single tournament. Pass The Sugar is being produced by Hachem’s brother and business manager, Tony, alongside Catilin Murney while financing has allegedly been secured from an Australia production company called Stack Exchange. The film is set to feature interviews with celebrity poker players including Jennifer Tilly and Jose Canseco and will be Cates’ sixth directorial film effort. Cates, son of film producer Gil Cates Sr and brother of actress Phoebe Cates, was the man behind poker film Deal, which was released earlier this year starring Burt Reynolds, Bret Harrison and Shannon Elizabeth. In additon, he has directed films such as Life After Tomorrow and A Midsummer Night's Rave alongside numerous television programmes and worked as a producer and actor.
