Sportingbet Employee Released

After being detained by Turkish police in May, one member of staff is allowed to return to the UK.

Friday 1st August 2008

UK-based online betting company Sportingbet has revealed that one of the two employees detained by police in Turkey in May has been released following an appeal. The London-based firm stated that the released employee has returned to Britain while a second employee remains in custody awaiting formal charges. 'The group continues to offer him support and is seeking clarification about when and what charges, if any, will be brought,' Sportingbet revealed in a statement. Police in Turkey detained the two Sportingbet employees earlier this year along with 37 others associated with its SuperBahis.com partner following five raids across the nation on allegations of money laundering. At the time, the nation’s Financial Crimes Investigation Board stated that Turkey-facing SuperBahis.com had received money from over 600,000 Turkish players that was then allegedly transferred to the UK before ending up in Swiss bank accounts or back in Turkey as payment for services. Sportingbet said that net gaming revenues from Turkey accounted for about 14 percent of its total third quarter profits, which was down from around 26 percent for the second quarter.
