Last night saw the first throws of the Irish Poker Championship Tour which is sponsored by PartyPoker.com. The first stop was the Eglinton Card Room and Casino, the first of eight such events on the island over the coming days. The Irish Poker Championship Tour is very much a preamble to the main Irish Poker Championship of 2009 and each winner from the 8 venues will receive a place at the main event next year.
This year’s tour has already attracted around 300 players, more than many had expected with terrible weather hitting the country of late. Thankfully for those not able to make it to the table events there will be a number of online qualifying games courtesy of PartyPoker.com later in the year.
As you might expect, poker has taken off in the emerald isles with more players than ever before sampling both the online and offline varieties. Events such as the Irish Poker Championship Tour have brought the sport into the mainstream and backed by such well known names as PartyPoker it seems as though the event could hardly fail.
Thankfully Ireland has a few up and coming poker players who could make a name for themselves and push the sport higher up the popularity table.
