The Ontario Provincial Police have attracted a mass of unwelcome press coverage after news that their ongoing investigation into a number of suspect Lottery wins in the state collapsed with confirmation that no charges will be brought. One of the main focuses of attention had been a former store owner who had won $1.2 million over nine years with 167 separate claims – although this was just one of many such alleged incidents.
The investigation has been lambasted in the press after the story of Bob Edmonds was revealed, and the actions of the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation (OLG). It was alleged that Mr Edmonds had been swindled out of a $250,000 win by a store clerk and when he took his claim to the high courts he was fought all of the way by the OLG. Allegations were rife that the OLG was trying to drag the case out to keep Mr Edmonds quiet although the fact that he recently died has brought the case to something of an abrupt end.
Thankfully there are literally hundreds of state and country wide lotteries around the world which have a much better track record than the Ontario one. Business is still very brisk in the sector as a whole with more and more people look for the ‘big one’.
