Kellogg’s unwitting cereals gamble

Promotional DVD in cereal box links to illegal gambling site

Wednesday 31st March 2004

As a part of its regular marketing in cereal boxes, Kellogg’s the US cereal giant included a DVD, with promotional material for children.

But customers soon discovered that the children's motorcycle simulation G-rated DVD game, contained links or URLs to an online casino. The company is now being urged by parents and consumer advocates to scrap the promotion.

Packets of the Kellogg's Nutri Grain cereal, which had the DVDs is now raising eyebrows of Australian politicians. ‘The Internet link could allow children

to gamble away their parents' savings. It is clear that federal online gambling laws are not working,’ warns South Australian MP Nick Xenophon.

Reacting to the criticism, Kellogg's said that is stopped the circulation of the promotional material with the links, although the Internet link does not work.

‘Having access to online casinos is really quite insidious in the context of a G-rated game that is being flogged off on packets of cereal,’ adds MP, Xenophon.

Currently, it is illegal for Australians to provide online ‘casino-style’ gambling games. Law enforcement officials said they would determine if supplying the disc in Australia was a breach of the law.
