News that there is a bill going through the halls of power in California which could legalise the sport of online gambling, including poker, has received many headlines in the press but is it actually true?
The California Gambling Control/Intrastate Legalization Act AB 2026 was originally introduced as a study to see if California wanted to look at the possibility of over riding Federal law and accepting online gambling for those in the state of California. The bill was then amended to include poker but seemingly after pressure from the high halls of power it has been re-amended to its old form of a study only. But is this the sign of things to come?
The very fact that the State governor is even looking into the possibility of introducing online gambling to the statute book is very interesting and very encouraging for an industry which died a death. However, many people believe that it is the state’s need for more income and the requirement to balance the books which is forcing the move to be considered.
If the state of California was not the lone voice in the crowd it may be easier to force change, but at this moment there seems little real opportunity to legalise online poker in the short term.
