Gritty Scottish writer Irvine Welsh has revealed that he has a soft spot for the luxurious gaming resorts of Monte Carlo.
The 49-year-old author of Trainspotting commented in the Times newspaper that he likes stylish destinations for his breaks, particularly Monaco and the south of France.
He noted that anyone taking a gambling holiday had to be prepared to lose money, but that while everyone ended up with less than they started with, the buzz of playing was the real attraction.
Monte Carlo's casinos provide Welsh with the opportunity to live out his "Bond fantasy", according to the author, who stated that despite his lack of financial success he still "loves it".
Welsh commented: "I like chic places. Theres nothing better than putting on a white suit and going to a casino in Monte Carlo."
Some fans may be surprised by Welsh's fondness for the bright lights of Monte Carlo given the preoccupation with Scotland's working class in novels such as Trainspotting and The Acid House.
