Poker Winner Takes Home 21 Million Frequent Flyer Miles!
Sunday 17th August 2008
While many of the big multi-million dollar tournaments are out of the reach of the everyday poker player, Bill Shiver of the US hit the jackpot in the recent OnePass 21st Birthday Texas Hold’em Poker Tournament at the Golden Nugget Hotel in Las Vegas. He bagged the top prize which was 21 million air miles with Continental Airlines!
As the name of the tournament suggests the prize was part of a promotion to celebrate 21 years of the frequent flyer miles service. In total the airline gave away 25 million air miles with the second place competitor taking 1 million mile and the rest split between the top ten finishers. Quite how you can use up 21 million air miles in a lifetime remains to be seen but Bill Shiver will certainly give it a try with plans to travel around the globe.
More and more we are seeing major companies join forces with casinos and gambling groups to reach out to a new market in the knowledge that prizes such as this will grab headlines around the world. In times of economic gloom it seems as though more and more industries are prepared to try new and potentially exciting alternative promotional arenas – all to the benefit of the legion of poker players.
