News that two brutal murders in the City of Newcastle may well be linked to a Far East betting scam has shocked many in the industry. The murder of two young Chinese students has again brought the Far East betting rings into the headlines and the power which they seem to have around the world.
The scam seems to have involved a number of football matches around the globe and the fact that at least one of those who was murdered had been looking to recruit ‘spotters’. The idea seems to have been to make use of the delay between events at these matches been reflected on the in-play betting exchanges – which could be up to a minute in some events – in order to place substantial bets.
While as yet there is no suggestion that any of these matches were fixed or in any way interfered with it is rumoured that there may have been some friction with some of the larger gambling rings in the Far East. With literally millions of pounds at stake the whole saga seems to have been brought to a very shocking conclusion and as yet the UK authorities are no nearer finding those who committed the atrocities.
