Can TV Ever Make A Difference To Poker Numbers?

Tuesday 19th August 2008

While the UK government relaxed the various rules on casinos and gambling operations advertising to the wider population there seems to have been little follow through as yet. The high profile gambling adverts seem to have disappeared and some are now starting to question the value of advertising gambling operations on TV. So do they have a point?

Even though to the wider audience it would seem that gambling adverts are not as prominent as many had expected they have been appearing on a regular basis in some of the more niche areas of TV – sports channels, etc. At this stage it is probably a case of building up profiles with the UK population and making them aware of services which are available such as in-play betting rather than blanket advertising.

However, there is no doubt that the depressed UK economy has seen many gambling groups suffer from reduced numbers with the large groups ‘keeping their powder dry’ for better times. On the other hand there has been a large increase in TV programs covering the likes of Poker with the UK and the rest of the world sensing the growing numbers who want to watch tournament Poker.

So at the moment it is more Poker and gambling programs which are to the fore but this is sure to change as and when the economy recovers.
