How On Earth Is Gordon Brown Hanging On?
Monday 25th August 2008
Love him or hate him you have to admire the durability of the PM Gordon Brown who just seems to railroad his way through leadership woes and rumoured challenges. Just a couple of weeks ago it seemed that his days were numbered as cabinet colleague David Milliband went on record with ‘his’ vision of the future – seen by many as his shot at the leadership. So when will Gordon Brown go? Will he walk or will he be pushed?
A quick look at the betting market shows you that the most popular exit date is somewhere between April and June 2010 where his odds are just below 4/1. If the markets are right he seems to have weathered the current storm with odds of over 20/1 on him leaving office before the end of September – a good outside bet?
One period which seems to be very popular with the gambling markets is October to December 2008 in the aftermath of what is expected to be a very turbulent and uncomfortable Labour Party conference. Will he receive a vote of no confidence from his former supporters or will he manage to win them over with his dogged determination?
