Intralot Joins FIFA’s Early Warning System

Greek sportsbetting announces deal to join in global effort at eradicating unethical soccer betting.

Greek sportsbetting and lottery provider Intralot has signed an agreement with the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) that will see it become part of a global effort to preserve and protect the integrity of soccer. The agreement was signed between Intralot’s Betting Company subsidiary and FIFA’s Early Warning System (EWS) GmbH subordinate and will see the Greek firm inform soccer’s governing body on any betting patterns that could indicate possible manipulation of matches from jurisdictions where it offers its services. Any information received from Betting Company is to undergo scrutiny by EWS, which will also inform Betting Company on any events that may be under its surveillance. “We are very happy to welcome Betting Company as an important and reliable partner in our worldwide warning system,” said Urs Scherrer, Chief Executive Officer for EWS. “The expansion of our information network is one of the most important bricks in our aim to safe the integrity of sports.” FIFA founded Zurich-based EWS in May of last year after resolving to take every step necessary in order to detect and prevent the possible influencing of soccer matches for betting purposes. FIFA stated that its actions are intended to prevent sportsbetting from having any negative impact on matches and, at the same time, raise awareness of the problem throughout the entire world. Moreover, it stated that its EWS initiative provides governmental authorities with valuable assistance in battling to eradicate unethical and illegal acts. “We are very content to form part of such an important network,” said Constantinos Antonopoulos, Chief Executive Officer for Intralot. “Transparency is a means to safeguard the values and the integrity of football and sports in general. Intralot strongly supports this initiative that creates a credible and sound operational framework for its global activities”.
