Ryan Dreyer picked up the $350,000 (£198,000) first prize after winning the Sun City Million tournament in South Africa.
Various celebrities were involved in the proceedings, including cricketer Shane Warne and American Pie actress Shannon Elizabeth.
Both celebrities have been regulars on the poker scene in recent months, and they joined 270 other players at the felt for this event.
As for Dreyer, who is nicknamed "Rhino", he used to play golf to a decent standard but it is poker where his focus now lies.
Talking to Poker Listing after his victory in Africa, he said: "The field was very strong by South African standards.
"There were a host of international players including numerous Scandinavians and also some world renowned players like Patrik Antonius."
Dreyer's golfing career generally involved playing events on the Sunshine Tour in South Africa. He also appeared in various competitions in the US and Canada.
