The end of an era as world’s first regulated casino closes
Saturday 4th October 2008
It may not be the world’s best know casino group but the demise of Lasseters in Australia draws down the curtain on a great era for the casino industry. Just nine years ago the group was the first in the world to open a regulated online casino but after racking up loses of some $15 million in the last year the group is now pleading for money from its parent company – but the silences is literally deafening. So what next?
As the auditors of the online casino division refuse to sign off the accounts as a going concern and there is no new funding available from the parent group the online gambling site took its final bet yesterday prior to going offline. There are diminishing hopes that the division will be saved but once you go offline there is nothing to attract even the smallest number of customers – Lasseters is affectively dead.
While we say goodbye to Lasseters the online casino industry has moved ahead over the last nine years and must be almost unrecognisable from the early day groups. Technology has changed, broadband is now freely available and the jackpots have literally exploded over the last few years. What a difference nine years makes!
