Kahnawake Issues Kentucky Statement

One of the world’s largest operators of online casinos reveals that it has no intention of complying with Seizure Order.

Friday 10th October 2008

The Kahnawake Gaming Commission has issued a strong statement in opposition to recent efforts by the American state of Kentucky to seize 141 online gambling domain names. One of the world’s largest licensors of online gambling sites, the Commission is based in the Kahnawake Reservation near Montreal, Canada, and has long asserted its sovereign right to offer Internet-based services. While it did not send a representative to this week’s initial hearing on the matter before the Frankfort Circuit Court, it did advise Steve Beshear, the Governor for Kentucky and a proponent of the action, that it has little intention of complying with the state in the matter whatever the outcome of the case. 'We are compelled to draw to your attention that your actions will also adversely affect the members of our community and that is not acceptable,” wrote Grand Chief Michael Ahrihrhon Delisle in a letter to Governor Beshear. At the initial hearing held on Tuesday, Judge Thomas Wingate ruled that he needed an additional week to determine whether the state’s Seizure Order should be reconsidered. If passed, the measure would see names including AbsolutePoker.com, BodogLife.com, CakePoker.com, DoylesRoom.com, FullTiltPoker.com and PokerStars.com forfeited to Kentucky. 'This is a perfect example of someone who knows nothing about the effects of their actions,' said Delisle. 'It's not the first time that a government has tried to prevent us from conducting business and it won't be the last. But, rest assured, we will always protect our jurisdiction and the integrity of the Kahnawake Gaming Commission.'
