Like a footballer injured in his prime it was a sad week for horse racing fans this week with news that US super horse Big Brown has been retired due to an injury sustained in a work out on the turf course at Aqueduct. While this is a sudden end to a distinguished career there really was no choice for the owners as the horse tore a 3 inch strip of flesh off his foot after it collided with his right-rear foot while in full flow.
The injury is not life threatening and will not affect the horses future standard of living but it will rule him out of the $5 billion Breeders Cup Classic at the end of this month. This was supposed to have been the long awaited head to head between Big Brown and 2007 Horse of the Year Curlin but it is not to be.
Big Brown brought in an impressive $3,614,500 for his owners and while suffering from a virus when finishing last in the Belmont Stakes he was a firm favourite of the US racing community. The old pro will now retire to a stud farm in Kentucky where he will literally be treat like royalty!
