While Matt Lessinger must be fulfilling every poker players dream on the surface, the truth is so very different. Those who have not come across the name will be amazed to learn that he is paid to play poker 8 hours a day (6am until 2pm) for 5 days a week. He is on the gaming books of the Oaks Card Club in Emeryville but there are a number of strings attached!
In essence he is employed to keep short hand games going, to keep players interested and to ensure that as many players as possible play for as long as possible. However, the kicker is that Matt Lessinger has to use his own money to play the game, he gets no special treatment from the casino and if he loses money then tough luck.
So even when he may be down to his last few dollars, and still has a few hours to go, he needs to find cash from somewhere to keep going. In his eight years in the role Matt Lessinger says that he has made a profit on his poker playing – with his wages on top – but there are patches where money is tight. So maybe not the perfect job for everyone!
