In a bitter blow to the gambling industry it has been revealed that the case against 141 gambling sites alleged to trade in Kentucky will go ahead. The case is being brought by Governor Steve Beshear who claims the sites are contravening Kentucky laws on gambling and as such the state is looking to take control of all 141 domain names and close down the sites. The signs last week were that the case would be dismissed but the judge has decided to let it ride to court.
It has also been revealed that Governor Steve Beshear has received a massive 12,000 letters suggesting that he drop the case with many from voters in Kentucky. Quite how voters will react if the case is successful and the inhabitants of the region are taken out of the gambling market remains to be seen as there have already been claims of a voter backlash.
While in theory there may be a case to answer, there are literally millions of people who cannot understand how a state can run gambling operations yet ban any kind of competition. Then there is the matter or transferring the domains in question to the state – what then?
