The World Poker Tour’s North American Poker Championship has seen a whopping $1.22 million paid out to eventual winner, 67 year old Glen Whitmer. While there were those who did not take Mr Whitmer seriously at first sight, they soon knew that he meant business and was there to win!
Held at the Grand Hall casino, the event was a long haul and saw seasoned pros fall one by one after the final table began with six payers. It actually took an amazing seven and a half hours to whittle down the numbers from six to one with Whitmer finally taking the plaudits. While it all seems to have been as big a shock for Mr Whitmer as it was for those he played against, he has no plans to turn professional.
It was 11.30pm on Thursday evening when he was finally able to claim his prize after he knocked out his last challenger Gavin Smith, a man that has tournament earnings of over $3 million to his name. Even there is no doubt that Whitmer can play it was interesting to see the reaction of those who met the champ, a more humble man you could not wish to meet.
