As we covered yesterday it seems as though the World Poker Tour (WPT) is in serious trouble after news that the group has now closed it real-money online poker room. This room was operated in conjunction with the Cryptologic network and while initially it did very well, of late the income created has been on the slide and after taking into account the Cryptologic licensing fees it was not a viable business going forward. So what next?
It would be blasphemy to consider the WPT without its own online real-money poker room so surely we must see a new operation admitted to the mix in the short term. Even though the WPT may not have the same profile as the likes of the WSOP there must surely be scope for it to translate its sizable following into a worthwhile income stream?
However, as the group continues to run old poker tournament programs on the likes of Fox Sports there is a concern that the WPT is missing out on the substantial income which is created by large scale competitions such as those administered by WSOP. Surely there must be a way out of this mess for the WPT?
