Gregory Raymer the first WSOP $5 million man

Friday 24th October 2008

Born on the 25th June 1964, in Minot, North Dakota, Gregory Raymer first shot to fame after the WSOP 2004 event which saw him become WSOPS’s first $5 million man after he pocketed the massive jackpot. However, Gregory Raymer is no one hit wonder and he has a name and a reputation which goes before him!

While the game of poker has changed over the last few years, it was not until 1999 that Gregory Raymer actually took up the game, playing in the Foxwoods Resort Casino, Stonington, Connecticut where he worked as a patent lawyer for a drug company. However, when he climbed onto that ladder in 1999 even he would never have though it would take him up to the skies!

He may be best remembered for his WSOP 2004 win but he had his first WSOP finished back in 2001, just 2 years after beginning his poker career. His entry to WSOP 2004 was via a $160 satellite game which has now seen him become an integral part of the PokerStars team and bank millions in winnings and sponsorships.

He nearly repeated his 2004 win in 2005 when he made it to the last 25 before falling as the final table approached. He is the only defending champion to get anywhere near the final table and it is likely to be a record which will remain unbroken for some time!
