Frankie Dettori has literally ripped the heart out of US racing this evening by taking the Breeders Cup Classic on Ravens Pass. As the race progressed it seemed as though the stage had been set for Curlin (which had seen over $1 million wagered on the horse trackside) and coming off the final bend he made his move for the big one. However, whether there was something wrong or he was just beaten by a better horse, he was being stalked by Ravens Pass all the way.
As they powered off the final bend there were a few seconds when you thought it was all over only for Curlin to blow up and run home a disappointing 4th behind Ravens Pass in 1st place, Henrythenavigator in 2nd and Tiago in 3rd. This win is number eight for Frankie in the Breeders Cup Classic and fully validates his decision to stick with Ravens Pass when many thought he would not see out the distance.
Even though the US crowds were disappointed that Curlin did not come home with the glory he is still an American hero and will have lost few fans after this courageous attempt to retain his Breeders Cup Classic crown.
