The only certain thing about football in the UK is to expect the unexpected and news of Harry Redknapp’s shock move from Portsmouth to Tottenham Hotspur for £5 million on Saturday evening almost topped the on off on off sacking of Kevin Keegan at Newcastle United.
While unlike many managerial moves this one was done with the blessing of the Portsmouth board which realised as soon as the move was made that Redknapp could not turn the challenge down, although a £5 million transfer fee for their manager must surely have helped them make up their mind!
So who will be next on the Portsmouth gravy train?
While we have a number of the old names such as Alan Curbishley, Avram Grant, Sam Allardyce, Steve Coppell and Terry Venables in the frame it looks as though Harry’s former second in command at Portsmouth, Tony Adams, could be offered the job on a fulltime basis. It is interesting to see his odds plummet to odds today and the fact that Harry Redknapp has already appointed his new back room team at Spurs.
However, the fact he has not moved to Spurs should be taken into context as Adams played for arch rivals Arsenal for many years and he would never have been accepted by the fans!
