Can Kauto Star do it again?
Friday 21st November 2008
With just two days to go before the Betfair Chase at Haydock it seems as though the clever money is on Kauto Star to land the prize for the third consecutive year. Paul Nicholls 2007 Gold Cup winner appears to have been in fine form at the stables and early this week received an outing over 20 small hurdles. While these are nowhere near the hurdles that Kauto Star will encounter at Haydock on Saturday the workout has boosted the confidence of the stable and trainer in his top class horse.
The six horse field will also include Snoopy Loopy, Cloudy Lane, Ollie Magern, Tamarinbleu and Exotic Dancer. While Kauto Star is by far and away the bookies favourite for the race many will recall the dramatic run-off with Exotic Dancer last year in the same race which was the highlight of a very special event. That is not to say that the other four horses should not be considered but it would take a serious drop in form or some serious errors for Kauto Star to be relieved of his title.
While anti-post betting is available on the race some may wish to wait until Saturday and see exactly what is happening on the day.
