Is Gordon Brown the best poker player of all time?
Sunday 30th November 2008
While we have heard about the millions of dollars on offer at the likes of the World Series of Poker Championships the figures mentioned pale into insignificance when placed against the hand that UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown has dealt over the last few months. Gordon Brown has literally gambled up to £500 million on the UK economy improving in the short term!
The PM is showing all the signs that we see in professional poker players in that he is able to focus solely on the job at hand, increase his stake where he believes it is sensible, and back his judgement to the hilt. The fact that the stake is in the region of £500 million shows that this is one "poker player" who has the nerve to play the game.
He has received much criticism over the last few weeks although like all good poker players, he has ignored both criticism and praise in equal measures. The fact that he can stand at the dispatch box in the Commons and justify his stakes very much highlights his appetite for a fight. This is literally the largest gamble ever undertaken by a UK PM and if he is successful the potential rewards are enormous.
