Manchester United grab the spoils in a local derby
Sunday 30th November 2008
While it was billed as a clash of the titans with the new look Manchester City team set to take on their nearest rivals Manchester United, in all honesty this was a very poor game. Manchester United took the lead early on with a Wayne Rooney tap-in from close range and after that there was very little excitement in the game.
While Manchester City did their best to break the deadlock they never really got within sight of goal and the number of shots on target from both teams was very low. The only real excitement was the sending-off of Cristiano Ronaldo after an impetuous challenge gave him his first yellow card after which he then bizarrely decided to handle a cross into the Manchester City box for his second card. The referee had no option in reality as technically it was a yellow card offence.
This win now takes Manchester United into third place just five points behind Chelsea with a game in hand and five points behind Liverpool who play tomorrow. There is the potential for Liverpool to move three points clear at the top of the table which is something Liverpool fans have not seen in some time.
